A G-OWL-lery of
(well, you know...)

Northern Saw-whet Owl #764-53706 poses for a picture...
or two after banding!
In order to determine its age, Powdermill banding intern, Adrienne Leppold, examines the wing plumage of  #764-53706, which she caught at last light.
Its wing plumage lacked any contrasts among molted and unmolted
flight feathers, showing it to be a hatching year (HY) bird.
Originally banded almost seven years ago on 1/1/95, gray phase Eastern Screech Owl #745-11130 was very fat, sleepy, and entirely docile during her recapture handling today--she was found today in the very same roost box where she was originally banded (and where she was also recaptured on 2/25/96) !
Unlike #745-11130, when #745-11141 was recaptured today she was "lean and mean," wide-eyed, very alert and ready to defend herself with talons and beak!   She was originally banded along with her three well grown downy young at a nest box near the Powdermill banding lab on May 25, 1998.
