Wednesday,
April 9 through Sunday April 13, 2003: Just
five new species were added to the spring banding list this week:
Downy Woodpecker,
Belted Kingfisher,
Brown Creeper,
Brown Thrasher,
and Northern Saw-whet Owl.
The owl was caught late Saturday night using tape playback. A few
attempts to call in migrating Saw-whets earlier in the spring had been
unsuccessful.

The honor and experience of banding
our first NSWO
of the season went to visiting ringer, Professor
David Norman, on his last night at the Powdermill
banding station before returning home to Cheshire, England. As we
have said here before (but it bears repeating!), Dr.
Norman provided indispensable help to us before,
during, and after the back-to-back Eastern
Bird Banding Association annual meeting and
North
American Banding Council evaluation workshop,
both held here at Powdermill from 4-8 April.
Dr. Norman,
who first visited Powdermill last fall, quickly became a fixture at the
Powdermill banding lab this spring, generously sharing his broad knowledge
and experience with our interns and visitors and providing constant encouragement
and inspiration to us all--thank you, David, for all your help. We
look forward to your next visit to the Powdermill banding lab, or to trying
our own hands at ringing with you on the other side of The Pond, whichever
comes first!

Prof. Norman
takes a budding field ornithologist, Master
Jeffrey Lanzone, under his wing. Jeffrey
is the son of Mike Lanzone
who currently is working with Powdermill's Bob
Mulvihill on a photographic
guide to the ageing and sexing of North American birds.
